Sunnya (she/her) is the editor-in-chief for the Niner Times. She is in her third year as an international studies and data science double major. On the side, Sunnya loves to take photos and make digital designs. When she’s not in the newsroom, you’ll probably find her at the top level of the library tower. Her favorite things are the color green, fun sunglasses, space and pizza. The weirdest (and best) pizza topping she ever ate was lemon.
Monique (she/her) is the managing editor for Niner Times. She is in her second year and is a double major in Communications and English with a minor in WRDS. Monique is a first generation American and is bilingual in Afrikaans (South Africa). Outside of being managing editor, she spends her time taking care of her plants, reading or meditating. She loves the color green, rainy weather and finding antiques. If you can’t find her in the newsroom, you might see her taking a walk in the Botanical gardens.
Dezanii Lewis (she/her) is the community editor for the Niner Times. She is in her final semester as an English major and Journalism minor. She has been passionate about writing since the age of six. When she is not writing, she is reading books, playing with her dogs or playing video games. After graduating, her dream is to be a published author or journalist.
Kathleen (she/her) is the news editor for the Niner Times. She is going into her third year at Charlotte and is studying communications with minors in journalism and American studies. She is from Wake Forest, N.C., and hopes to be a journalist for one of the major newspapers one day. Aside from journalism, she likes reading whenever she has the time and playing video games on her pc with her friends. She also likes spending time with her family and traveling to new places.
Jackson (he/him) is the assistant news and copy editor at Niner Times. He is in his fourth year, majoring in writing, rhetoric & digital studies. Outside of his writing career at UNC Charlotte, you can find Jackson making lattes, exploring Charlotte or working on some new music. After graduation, Jackson plans to move up north to work in the music industry and study rhetoric and composition in graduate school.
Jess (she/her) is the opinion editor for the Niner Times. This is her third year as a communications major with a double minor in journalism and English. Originally from Concord, N.C., the Charlotte area is like home to her. Some of her favorite things include animals (she’s partial to cats) and collecting random items. Journalism is one of her passions, alongside listening to music, playing video games and getting boba with friends. In her free time, you can probably find her getting yet another tattoo or, hopefully, attending a concert.
Lola (she/her) is the assistant opinion editor for the Niner Times. She is in her first year as a pre-public health major. She is from Chapel Hill, N.C., and in her free time, she enjoys doing crossword puzzles, playing guitar and going to concerts. If she’s not in the newsroom, she’s likely in the upper level of the Union doing homework or at a coffee shop.
Bethany (she/her) is the arts and culture editor for the Niner Times. She is a senior majoring in graphic design and with a minor in journalism. She enjoys visiting downtown Concord every chance she gets and visits local bookstores and coffee shops. When she’s not writing, taking photos for schoolwide events or doing school work, Bethany loves spending time with her friends and family, drinking iced coffee, traveling, going to concerts, collecting vinyl records, photography or just simply listening to music.
Cat Beck (she/her) is the assistant arts and culture editor for the Niner Times. She is a freshman majoring in English and enjoys writing, reading, playing video games and listening to music. If she was a sandwich, she would be a grilled cheese.
Bryson (he/him) is the sports editor for the Niner Times. He is a fourth-year communication major with a double minor in journalism and film studies at Charlotte. He grew up in Concord, North Carolina, in the heart of NASCAR country. He is an avid sports fan who pulls for the Cincinnati Bengals, Chase Elliott, the North Carolina Tarheels, and most importantly, the Charlotte 49ers. Some of his favorite activities include watching sports and hanging out with friends whenever possible. Outside of being a journalist, Bryson is a brand ambassador for Quantum Rehab, helping fight for accessibility for wheelchair users.
Joey (he/him) is the assistant sports editor for the Niner Times. He is going into his fourth year studying mass communications with a minor in journalism and technical theater. He is from Wake Forest, N.C. but is originally from Long Island, N.Y. He loves sports, whether it be playing, watching or even writing about it. His favorite sports are football and basketball. Joey spends most of his time with friends and not only has a love for sports but movies and video games as well.
AJ (they/them) is the copy editor at Niner Times. They are in their third year double majoring in psychology and writing, rhetoric & digital studies, as well as minoring in biology. When they're not falling down a research rabbit hole, AJ is probably taking care of houseplants or digging through a mountain of vinyl records. (Fear not, AJ’s albums are meticulously organized.) After graduation, they plan to attend graduate school and teach writing at a university.
Madison Bradburn (she/her) is one of the assistant copy editors and an English graduate student concentrating at UNC Charlotte. Some of her favorite works to read and write include horror, mystery and fantasy. Interested in non-human spaces, Madison loves writing about hostile locations and claustrophobic settings. She plans to graduate with her master's degree and continue to a doctorate program. From there, she hopes to teach English at the college level.
Jade (she/her) is the photo editor for the Niner Times. She is in her second year as a communications major with minors in sociology and women and gender studies. Outside of the Niner Times, Jade enjoys taking photos, photoshopping, roller skating and listening to her favorite band AJR. When she’s not in the newsroom, you can find her either at a concert, Target or Carowinds.
Jacob Scannell (he/him) is the assistant photo editor and an Architecture major. He is working to increase his photography portfolio and pursue his passion for taking pictures. Apart from doing arts and crafts in Storrs, he enjoys backpacking and baseball. He hopes to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Architecture alongside his photography portfolio to pursue architectural photography.
Miguel (he/him) is non-traditional senior studying psychology and public relations communications. Between high school and coming to UNC Charlotte, he completed the Camino de Santiago in Spain twice (1,000 total miles backpacking), solo traveled to 38 of the 50 states, competed in triathlons and boogied in nine countries. When he's not in the newsroom, school, work or gym, he's working towards becoming a National Geographic photographer, house flipping with his sister and singing poorly driving down the freeway. Oh, and he's earning his pilot's license.
Zoya (they/them) is the layout editor at Niner Times. They are in their fourth year, majoring in political science and minoring in journalism and art history. They love watching video essays on any topic, visiting art museums and going to concerts. When they aren’t piecing together the paper on Sundays, you can find them volunteering at the campus botanical gardens or making their friends watch outlandish and bad movies.
Arin (they/them) is the assistant layout editor at Niner Times. They are a senior double majoring in international relations and illustration, with an early entry into the Latin American studies graduate program. After graduation, they hope to go into investigative journalism or write and illustrate for other publications. When not working, they love watching horror movies, playing music, and exploring abandoned buildings.
