After more than 11 years of serialization, the final chapter of the manga "Attack on Titan" by Hajime Isayama will be released on April 9.
"Attack on Titan" is set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by man-eating monsters called titans and follows the story of Eren Yeager, a boy who wants to get revenge on the titans for killing his mother and for taking away his freedom. He soon learns that he can turn into a titan himself, which he uses to protect his people (the Eldians) and fight his enemies. Once Eren learns the truth about the world, his enemies change from the titans to the rest of humanity.
I started reading "Attack on Titan" in the latter half of 2020 when it was already on its final story arc, and the manga lives up to the hype around it. It is full of action, twists and political commentary bound to make readers speechless, scream, cry or all of the above. All the characters are so fleshed out and well-developed, and it is hard to pick a favorite one (mine are Armin Arlert and Jean Kirstein). If you have not read manga before, this is one that you should definitely read at least once.
(WARNING: Major spoilers ahead! Anime-only fans beware!)
There are many theories about how "Attack on Titan" will end, but I think a lot of it is still on the table. One thing that seems most likely to happen, however, is Eren's death. At this point in the manga, Eren has only four years left to live because of Ymir's curse on titan shifters. The whole point of Eren unleashing the Colossal Titans onto the world is to break the cycle of hate between the Eldians and the rest of the world. He commits genocide on humanity because he wants his people on Paradis Island to be free from that hatred and fear for good.
I do not think Eren expects to live and see the fruits of his labor. Rather, he plans to die as the villain and pass the founding Titan's power onto Historia's newborn child. Entrusting the future of humanity onto a baby seems unrealistic. Still, seeing how all the other Eldians have been turned into pure titans, that baby is the only one who can inherit the power. This is speculation, and just about anything can happen in the last chapter.
What I hope to see in the conclusion of "Attack on Titan" is Eren's perspective since the Rumbling started, what the first Titan Ymir decides to do with the Eldians-turned-titans, and how the rest of the beloved characters fare. We have not seen what Eren is thinking for the past few chapters, so we do not actually know his actions' true motive. With the pure titans, I wonder if all of them will die or if they can all turn back into humans, but that depends on what Ymir and the next holder of the Founding Titan decides. As for the ending, I hope to find the closure I need in chapter 139 and see the characters start a new life of peace and freedom. Whatever the case, I cannot wait to read the epic conclusion of such a powerful and awe-inspiring manga.
