On Nov. 5, the day after Election Day, a Reddit post circulated urging UNC Charlotte students to “be careful” of an alleged “armed and disgruntled man” spotted on campus. The original post and thread has since been taken down, but not before alarming many students.

UNC Charlotte’s Chief of Police Jeffery Baker along with UNC Charlotte police staff determined the post was formed around false information. Police reached out to the creator of the Reddit post and determined that information had been confused with an incident at UNC Chapel Hill. The student has since taken down the original post.

“It was all speculation and there was nothing to be worried about,” said Baker.

The same Reddit thread detailed an encounter with “another man dressed in paintball gear with a paintball gun walking through campus.” According to Baker, the UNC Charlotte police have not been informed of this situation, but take matters like this extremely seriously in regards to campus safety.

In order to keep the UNC Charlotte community safe, Baker urged students to download the ‘Live Safe’ app for immediate response time. The app will connect students to dispatch over video, text or call. Baker added that the app has a feature for students to remain anonymous while reporting a potential crime or incident. More information about ‘Live Safe’ can be found on the UNC Charlotte website. Students can also call 687-704-2200 for campus emergencies.
