Around 11:40 a.m., a man was arrested by the campus police for trespassing in the Popp Martin Student Union on Oct. 20, 2022.

The man, wearing pink boots and a pink vest, was charged with possession of drugs and intent to distribute, trespassing, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer, according to a statement released by the Student Government Association (SGA).

In a video taken by a witness, the man appears to be resisting arrest and is heard screaming and saying, "leave me alone." The man pushes and tackles a police officer. During the tackle, a nearby student was knocked out of a chair. The man was then removed from the Union in handcuffs and escorted by four police officers to a campus police car. The specific events prior to the physical altercation between the suspect and police are currently unknown.

Reddit post from the SGA is the only official statement released at this time. This statement was originally posted around 2:30 p.m. and has since been edited.

"This individual is almost 30 years old with an arrest record and is NOT a student that attends UNC Charlotte. He has a no-trespassing order from the University. He has previously assaulted a female African American police officer and harassed females for refusing to purchase marijuana," according to the SGA post.

Several students expressed that they recognized the man. One Reddit user provided a physical description and details that he has no phone and always carries an iPad and a drawstring bag, which may have the Rush Student Living logo on it. Another user said the man harassed them and one of their friends.

SGA's original Reddit post contained information regarding the individual possibly being at an off-campus housing earlier in the day. This information has since been removed from the SGA post. The Niner Times reached out to the mentioned off-campus living facility, but they declined to comment on the incident or the original SGA statement.

The SGA advised students to immediately inform campus police if the individual is seen on campus again. They said, "The police are doing everything in their power to contain this individual and keep him from returning to campus."

The University has not released a statement about the incident at this time. The Niner Times is committed to providing more information as the story develops.
