The Charlotte 49ers (11-6, 2-4) got off to a rough start on their Fla. road trip as they fell to Conference-USA opponent Florida Atlantic by a score of 65-44.

Jade Phillips, who only scored seven points in their last contest, scored a team-high 17 points. Mariah Linney and Christian Hithe both had six points.

“We’ve got to find a way to get some confidence back on the offensive end,” Charlotte Head Coach Cara Consuegra said. “We got a lot of open shots. We’re just not finishing.”

The Owls struck first in the first quarter with a 12-6 run. They stretched out their lead with multiple three-pointers and held a 21-13 advantage over the 49ers.

Charlotte nearly staged a comeback in the second quarter as Phillips scored a three-pointer that helped the 49ers go on a 11-2 scoring run. Charlotte came within two points as the score was 23-21 in favor of FAU. That was the closest Charlotte came to tying. FAU lead 31-21 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Owls got back out to a lead and were in front of the 49ers by as much as 21 points. The FAU defense held Charlotte to under 30 percent shooting, but the 49ers out rebounded the Owls on the offensive end 17-10.

By the end of the third quarter, FAU was in full control with a 49-28 lead going into the final quarter.

Charlotte couldn’t get any offense going in the fourth quarter and FAU took the game 65-44.

The 49ers had trouble getting the ball rolling with their offense but Consuegra hopes to change that in the coming games.

“We have to do everything we can to get our confidence back,” Consuegra said on the next game. “It’s tough either way. We just have to claw and fight and do everything we can for the win.”

Charlotte will end their road trip on Saturday with a visit to Miami to play Florida International at 2 p.m.
