Niners celebrating a win

The Charlotte 49ers are set to host the Green & White Classic Feb. 21-23 with Campbell, Winthrop and Delaware State as the visiting teams.

The 49ers are coming off of an impressive 3-2 win against USC Upstate on Wednesday, Feb. 19 which put Charlotte at 6-6 on the season. Bailey Vannoy had a home run and two hits, Spenser Gray had three hits and Carson Pace pitched four innings with two strikeouts. 

Charlotte will start the weekend with a game against Campbell (5-6) on Friday, Feb. 21 at 4:30 p.m. The Camels have one player batting over .400 in Destini England. The leading pitcher for Campbell is Georgeanna Barefoot. She has a 2.68 ERA and three wins. Charlotte will play Campbell a second time on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m. 

Before that game, the 49ers will play Winthrop at 3 p.m. The Eagles are 6-5 this season and are coming off an 11-5 win against North Carolina A&T. Charlotte run ruled the Aggies 10-0 last weekend. Winthrop has signature wins over Georgetown and Virginia. Makayla Cyzick and Isabella Clark are both batting over .400 for the Eagles. Madison Watson is the leading pitching with three wins and a 2.57 ERA. Charlotte and Winthrop will clash for a second time on Sunday at 2 p.m. That will be Charlotte’s last game of the weekend. 

The 49ers will have one game with Delaware State on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 11:30 a.m. This will be the first time the two schools have played one another. The Hornets are 0-6 on the season thus far. Alaena Selden leads Delaware with a .438 batting average. 

Players to watch 

Bailey Vannoy, Charlotte: Vannoy has been on a hitting tear this season with a .486 batting average and seven home runs. The sophomore will need another big weekend to keep Charlotte’s winning ways going. 

Carson Pace, Charlotte: The senior pitcher has been the experience the 49ers need this season with two saves. She also leads Conference USA in innings pitched with 36.2. She will make a couple of appearances this weekend. 

Key to a win 

Keep the runs coming 

The 49ers are in the midst of a four game winning streak and have been successful when getting leads early in the game. Charlotte has scored 32 runs during the streak. Hitters such as Vannoy and Gray will be keys to getting runs early in the game.
