Graduate guard Drew Edwards

The Charlotte 49ers were close to victory Wednesday, Nov. 27 but a late run by Georgia State gave the Panthers a 81-78 win.

At the beginning of the game, the Panthers got off to a hot start, scoring five straight points until sophomore Malik Martin finally put the Niners on the board. A layup by Drew Edwards tied the game 9-9 with 16 minutes left in the half. After both teams exchanged the lead multiple times, the Panthers gained the momentum once again, taking a nine-point lead with 5:29 left in the half. After this, Charlotte scored seven straight to cut the lead down to two. A pair of free throws by Edwards gave the Niners the lead for the first time in eight minutes. A three-pointer by Georgia State’s Justin Roberts gave the Panthers a 38-36 halftime lead.

In the second half, Georgia State got off to a hot start once again scoring seven of the first nine points to take a 45-40 lead with 17 minutes left. With the Niners trailing by one point with 16 minutes left, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to take a 52-44 lead with 13 minutes left in the half. With Georgia State leading 58-50 with eight minutes left, the Niners then hit an offensive streak to take a 64-62 lead. Charlotte would keep the lead for the next couple of minutes until a three-pointer by Panther Kane Williams gave Georgia State a one-point lead with 30 seconds left. Charlotte had a chance to win the game with Jordan Sheperd at free-throw line, but he could only get one to fall to send the game to overtime.

Two minutes into overtime, both teams would score two points to keep the score level. Freshman Jamir Young gave the Niners a two-point lead with a good jumper. Right after this however, Corey Young went on to score five-straight points to seal Georgia State’s victory over Charlotte.

Three Charlotte players scored in double figures, with Edwards leading the game in scoring a season-high 24 points. Amidou Bamba recorded his first double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Charlotte will try to bounce back this Saturday, Nov. 30 as they take on the USC Upstate Spartans. Tipoff is at 4 p.m.
