After hosting a three-day tournament over the weekend, Charlotte welcomes USC Upstate for a mid-week game on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.

The 49ers are 5-6 thus far this season and are going into tonight’s game with a three-game win streak. Charlotte has outscored their opponents 29-9 in those games.

USC Upstate comes in with an 8-1 record and has outscored their opponents 42-16. The Spartans look to be the toughest opponent for Charlotte so far this season.

Players to watch

Bailey Vannoy, Charlotte: The sophomore catcher had an impressive weekend that included her first career grand slam. With a Spartan team that hasn’t allowed many runs, Vannoy will be the key for Charlotte when it comes to getting runs on the board. Vannoy has a .457 batting average and six home runs already this season.

Spenser Gray, Charlotte: With a relatively young team, Spenser brings much-needed experience as a senior. She has a .314 batting average this season, but has been a threat when it comes to stealing bases too. She leads the conference with seven and a couple more would help the 49ers tonight.

Tiffany Domingue, USC Upstate: Domingue is the leading hitter for USC Upstate. She is batting .467 with four doubles, a home run and 10 RBI’s. The 49er pitching staff will need to bring their best defense when Domingue is at the plate.

Erin Hill, USC Upstate: In what is a loaded pitching staff for the Spartans, Hill has been the standout this season. She has pitched 22 innings and has a 1.91 ERA.

Keys to a victory

Limit hitting bursts

As Charlotte has a loaded USC Upstate team to handle, they will need to limit as many hitting bursts as they can. USC Upstate has punished teams with impressive hitting each inning. The Spartans have four players batting over .400. If Charlotte can limit hits from the Spartans’ top hitters, a resume-building win is possible.

Spreading the hitting duties around

When it comes to hitting, the 49ers have been primarily led by Vannoy but have seen other players step up as well. Madelyn Wright had an explosive weekend as she went 10-for-12 with 10 RBI’s. Having players such as Vannoy and Wright having big nights could help the 49ers win in what will be a tough game.
