Niners prepare to block

Charlotte lost their matchup against the FAU Owls 3-0 (23-25, 13-25, 23-25). The loss moves Charlotte to 1-4 in conference play.

In the first set, the 49ers and Owls exchanged scoring spurts. During the set, both the Charlotte and FAU lineups played evenly matched as neither team was able to build a lead larger than three points. However, with the score knotted at 23-23, the Owls scored two unanswered points off of a 49er error and a kill by Junior Jordan Yauch.

FAU dominated the Niners in the second set behind a balanced attack led by Massiel Matos and Sydney Nemtuda. The Owls jumped out to a quick start by gaining an early 11-6 lead. Then, the Owls further extended their lead to 20-10 behind the efforts of a host of Owls. FAU closed the set out on a 5-3 run to claim a 25-13 victory.

In the third set, the 49ers claimed an early 8-5 lead in hopes of mounting a comeback attempt, but the Owls quickly knotted the score up at 11-11 and then claimed a 12-11 lead. FAU was able to maintain the lead until mid-way through the third set when the 49ers tied the score at 15-15. Charlotte claimed and kept a lead until the Owls tied the score at 20-20. However, with the score tied at 23-23, Matos recorded two consecutive kills to seal the win for the Owls.

The 49ers next game is Friday, Oct. 18 against the North Texas Mean Green at 7 p.m.
