The Charlotte women's basketball team will face the Florida Atlantic Owls on Thursday, Dec. 30, in Halton Arena at 6 p.m; to end 2021 and begin Conference USA (C-USA) play.

The 49ers are looking to get back on track against the Owls as they are coming off of a 79-65 loss against the Davidson Wildcats on Dec. 22. Head Coach Cara Consuegra wants to see the team improve on the defensive side of the ball against FAU.

"The difference in our game was defense," said Consuegra on the game against Davidson. "I'm extremely disappointed with our defensive effort in this game. We let someone come into our home court and shoot the ball almost 60%; that's unacceptable. We have to be better. When we don't have great enough effort on the defensive end, it's hard to win. Davidson is good. Until we sit down and buy into what we're supposed to be doing defensively, we will struggle."

Scouting the teams:

Charlotte has a current record of 4-6 on the season, will look to up their pressure on defense in this upcoming contest against FAU by pulling out all of the stops to gain a win. The Owls have a record of 4-7 on the season and are coming off a 65-63 loss against Alabama A&M on Dec. 20. Their last win took place on Dec. 7 against Florida Memorial, as they came out on top by a final score of 71-63.

Matchup History:

The 49ers and the Owls have a matchup history dating back to 1988. The first time the two teams faced one another, Charlotte won by a score of 81-56. The overall record between the two teams has Charlotte leading 7-3.

Charlotte has a home record of 5-1 when facing FAU inside the confines of Halton Arena. The last matchup between the two teams took place on Mar. 6, 2021, and it was a home win for Charlotte as they came out on top 83-73.

Key Players to watch for:

Senior guard Mikayla Boykin is coming off an outstanding performance in the last contest against Davidson as she recorded 24 points on 9/19 shooting from the field. Boykin has been consistent for the 49ers this season as she is averaging 12.8 points per game and 5.4 rebounds. She will hope to keep it up in the upcoming contest.

Senior guard Jada McMillian has been up and down this season after being named to the C-USA first team. McMillian is only averaging five points per game so far this season, and she will look to get off the snide against Flordia Atlantic.

Florida Atlantic senior forward Amber Gaston has a point total of 155 on the season. She averages 14.1 points per game and has produced at a high level for the team. This season, Gaston has been a critical player in their roster, and the 49ers will have to slow her down if they hope to come out on top in the game.

The 49ers will face the Florida Atlantic Owls on Thursday, Dec. 30, at Halton Arena, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. The game will be available for streaming on CUSA.TV.
